Locked Out

Last night we had a little run in with being locked out of... our bedroom! I was making supper and it involved bacon and I didn't want our bedroom to absorb the smell so I shut our door thinking nothing of it. After supper I then tried to get in to our room and couldn't. Um. Jesse. I'm locked out of the bedroom.

Upon closer inspection of the door knob... it wasn't just one of those where you can stick a paperclip inside to pop the lock. It actually took a real key! Then we started to notice that the rest of our doors did not have locks. Why did our bedroom door have such a sophisticated lock? A past resident must have changed the knob on this door and forgot to leave the key.

After trying all the keys we owned and a few paper clips we still could not get in. I started to get the giggles because everything is in that room. I pictured us having to sleep in the living room because our air mattress is in the spare room but the thing to blow up the mattress was in our bedroom. All of our clothes! I pictured Jesse having to go to work the next day with the clothes he had on... grubby jeans and a white t-shirt. He also wouldn't be able to brush his teeth because we have a bathroom inside our room... and well all that stuff was locked inside! I realize it wouldn't be as funny if it was me who had to go to work the next day and wouldn't be able to brush my teeth or do my hair...

I started to google "how to pick a lock". I found a very good video but I needed special lock picks!! Who has those just lying around?!

We contemplated just busting off the knob... it only has to be about $15 to get a new one, right?! Sure enough. I looked up door knobs on the Sears website. A new knob has to be cheaper then a locksmith.

We finally broke down and called our emergency maintenance number (it was after hours). He agreed with us that the people who lived here before us must have changed the knob because that is not their standard door knob. He suggested using a credit card and sliding it between the door jam. It worked!!!! Thank you Maintenance Man!! The joys of living in an apartment... a Maintence Man! : )

Honestly, as I was reading your story I was thinking "try a credit card"...seriously I was. We were frequently locked out of our apartment in Marshfield because the key didn't always work and we always got in with a credit card.
Way cheaper than a locksmith!

I locked myself out of the house this last weekend. Ellyn, Louie and I went outside and I told Ellyn not to shut the outside door all the way, she listened and we got in the "mud room." Well then it was time to go into the kitchen, um...the door was locked. I get a little scared by myself so I locked everydoor that could be locked. Well Ellyn is telling me to call someone to come help us, phones, including my cell are in the house. I am getting worried and then think about all the tools that are in the mud room. Thank god I thought of them or I don't know what we were going to do! Good thing the tools were out there cuz I didn't know what else to do??!!! We got back in and the door was unlocked, hasn't been locked since. Shann
